Cervical cancer can easily be prevented. Its cause is known: the human papillomavirus (HPV). Today, technologies are available to test for the cancer-causing types of HPV and determine if you may be at risk.

The digene HPV Test is the leading test approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that directly detects the presence of high-risk types of HPV. When used along with a Pap to screen women 30 and older, it more accurately identifies who is at risk of developing cervical cancer than the Pap alone.

Here are some ideas about how to spread the word:

  • Talk to members of your local community groups - Whether you are actually on the formal agenda or just use the "networking time", any meeting of a group or club consisting mostly of women is a good place to share information about cervical cancer prevention.
  • Participate in local walks, health fairs, etc. in which you can participate by manning an information table, inviting a medical speaker from the local hospital, etc.
  • Reach out to local media - Call or e-mail local news tip lines, reporters or producers about educational events in which you are involved or to share your personal story (for example, if you are a cervical cancer survivor). If you read a story about cervical cancer and/or HPV in a local publication that is incomplete (for example, by only talking about the vaccine and not about testing), write a letter to the editor. (Click here for a sample.) Check the Web sites of local stations or publications for their contact information.
  • Start or join an online network - Start a page on MySpace or Facebook, or join an existing HPV social networking group online to show your support for cervical cancer prevention.
