Educate Other Women on the Importance of HPV Testing and Cervical Cancer Prevention
Are you asking yourself, “What can I do to help educate those I know and love about HPV and cervical cancer?” Or, are you already lined up to participate in a club meeting, community fair or other event ideal for women’s health education, but you need some materials (brochures, awareness bracelets and DVD) that will help you make an impression? If so, we can help!

Here are some ideas about how to find opportunities to spread the word:
- Talk to members of your local community groups - Whether you are actually on the formal agenda or just use the "networking time" before the meeting starts, any meeting of a group or club consisting mostly of women is a good place to share what you've learned about cervical cancer prevention.
- Participate in local walks, health fairs, etc. - Sometimes your community will offer larger, organized events focused on health (especially women’s health), in which you can participate by manning an information table, inviting a medical speaker from the local hospital, etc.
- Have a party! - Read more about Tamika Felder for an inspirational example of how one woman turned her struggle with cervical cancer into a campaign to educate other women. She sponsors in-home "girlfriend events" called House Parties of Five. You can learn how to hold one of these networking parties in your own home by visiting the HPV Parties section of her site.
- Reach out to local media - Call or e-mail local news tip lines, reporters or producers about educational events in which you are involved or to share your personal story (for example, if you are a cervical cancer survivor). If you read a story about cervical cancer and/or HPV in a local publication that is incomplete (for example, by only talking about the vaccine and not about testing), write a letter to the editor. (Click here for a sample.) Check the Web sites of local stations or publications for their contact information.
- Start or join an online network - Start a page on MySpace or Facebook, or join an existing HPV social networking group online.
Ready to begin spreading the word in your community?
For activities involving girls and women of all ages, we can offer:
- Educational brochures that explain HPV and its connection to cervical cancer, as well as the steps needed to prevent cancer from developing (vaccination and screening using the Pap & digene HPV Test).
- "Take the Test" HPV awareness bracelets and pledge cards.
- A DVD with a short video in which women whose cervical disease was caught early with the HPV test tell their stories.
For events attracting mostly women age 30+, we can also offer a supply of purse mirrors OR lip balms with the digene HPV Test logo.
You can also download a PowerPoint presentation that you can use to explain HPV and the essentials of cervical cancer prevention to interested women.
